Custom Made Rainbow Bass

Leslie Edward "Les" Claypool (born September 29, 1963) is an American musician and writer, best known as the lead vocalist and bassist in the band Primus. Claypool's playing style on the electric bass mixes tapping, flamenco-like strumming, whammy bar bends, and slapping. He is widely regarded as one of the best rock bass players of all time.

As a youth, Claypool originally played guitar prior to taking up the bass. He later remarked: "I could've been a guitar player, but back then everybody wanted to be a guitar player, because everybody wanted to be Eddie Van Halen. I knew that if I got a bass, I could at least get a gig." Claypool then decided to become a bass player.

Claypool has used several different pre-amp distortion units during his career. His distorted tone is heard most notably on the Primus song "My Name is Mud". He also uses phaser, flanger and chorus effects and has also been seen to use an envelope filter during live bass solos.

The most infamous Carl Thompson bass Les owns, is a 6 string fretless, multi wood bass. It is nicknamed the "Rainbow Bass" because it has strips of walnut, curly maple, padauk, purple heart, ebony and cocobolo. The strings are threaded through the back of the rear extension - near where the strap pin is. They're stretched over a one-piece, hand-made wooden bridge and anchored by Schaller tuning machines. The basic part of the neck is made of quartersawn hardrock maple. The center of the fingerboard is Indian ebony, with 1/8-inch-wide strips of padauk, cocobolo and ebony on either side. Les got this just in time to record "Sailing the Seas Of Cheese".

Carl Thompson (born 1939) is a luthier and musician specializing in the construction of high-quality custom bass guitars. He is based in Brooklyn, New York.

Carl's biggest endorsee is Les Claypool of the band Primus, who plays and owns six or seven Carl Thompson basses, his most famous being the Rainbow Bass, a six-string fretless bass made of several different woods.
