Explorer Guitar Copy
Ahead of the cooperation between ESP and hetfield, Hetfields explorer type guitars was of Navigator band.
In the late eighties, ESP crafted lots of explorer guitars for Hetfield, including many popular electric guitars as raised middle finger inlayed EET FUK explorer, dots inlayed explorer with words A Year and a Half In the Life of Metallica; pt. 1. These kinds of instruments had been referred to as EX at the starting and later named MX-220ii.
Meaning of this name:
220- a common price tag
II- 2 pickups
MX-220II is a bit shorter than the length (from the strap button at bottom to the point of the headstock), the angular is smoother a little, the distance between the toggle change to the knob is a little bit even closer than the current explorer guitars. And it has a exclusive truss rod cover which is parallel to the nut and it has 2 anchoring screws. The construction of this specific guitar regarding the combination of the body along with the neck is round jack inserted.
The additional modification to MX-220II is applying a metal plate with four anchoring screws to fix the jacks. The truss rod cover still has 2 screws, but isn't parallel to nut anymore. No adjustment is done for the rest elements.
Later, in the advancement of the MX-220II, the ESP adjusted the construction back to bolt-on structure.
The subsequent MX-220II is quite the same to Hetfields 1st explorer. This electric guitar is belonging to EXPCustom with outdated fashioned body shape and no serial number. Its mentioned that there is no serial number and spherical trademark on the headstock back of the MX-220II electric guitar.
Presumably, the contour of the mx-220II is done according to the 1958 explorer

Afterwards, the new style was called MX250 (later on known as MX-II, 250 means the price tag). The MX-250II is a little longer in comparison with MX-220II, more pointed at the tip. In early 90's, ESP adopted parallel round ports. And in this edition, the pickups switch is a little farther away from the volume control and pickups.
Mx 250 was launched in Japan, with mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, mahogany body, poly finish, EMG 81 pickups, black dots inlays. No matter what color you need, they're always expensive. You could ask for any unique tuners along with other optional parameters, and you can customize this instrument in USA, but they are identified as "EXP custom" because the "MX" is allocated for some other styles. They have bell-shaped truss rod cover which is fixed with one screw, behind the headstock there is the serial number. ESP batch changed the shape of the truss rod cover in '55.
The image below is actually a EXP Custom created 03 MX-II version.
The esp explorer released in U.S. are all EXP versions that have two variations, ESP and LTD. EXP is of MX-II body, bolt-on neck, the ESP (ESP EXP) edition is characterized by maple neck, mahogany body, rosewood fretboard; the LTD edition (LTD EXP-200) is also of maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Its mentioned that the electric guitar body employed various materials in various ages, alder used in the earlier years, and later became mahogany. The fretboard inlays also changed, there were 2 dots in the twelfth fret of the early LTD edition but modified into a block (written with LTD) in later variations.
The subsequent picture is definitely an old design LTD EXP-200 and an ESP MX-II
In LTD series, there's a type known as EXP-300, which features a neck through construction, licensed Floyd Rose Bridge and two EMG 81 pickups
In 2000, ESP launched a manufacturing facility in Korea and developed LTD MX-130 that is much like ESP MX250 II. And the intriguing thing is there is certainly no serial number. These ESP MX250 II were marketed simply in Japan. Like MX-II, they've 2 EMG81 pick-ups, neck through framework and black color finish. These instruments occasionally could be identified on Ebay but were discontinued in 2003.
The initial EX/MX-220II custom inlays series is 1989s "EET FUK", which was released with a little quantity. The fifth fret is a little smaller and there is certainly no step over the neck. Obviously, Hetfield instantly found this problem; therefore the manufacturing line was required to be close up. It is stated that the quantity is under 30. Some ESP MX250 II body utilised this sort of inlays also.
The special ESP MX250 II as "Man To Wolf is known as Japans esp distinct interesting group, which means that you must bid a higher price to get ESP MX250 II.
Elk Skull ESP MX250 II was also made in the time period from late nineties to the year 2003 in custom series; they were personalized in the custom shop in Japan.
