Prior to the co-operation between Hetfield and ESP, Hetfields explorer type electric guitars belonged to Navigator band.
In the late 80s, ESP produced numerous explorer guitars for Hetfield, which includes many renowned guitars as raised-middle-finger inlayed EET FUK explorer, dots inlayed explorer having words A Year and a Half In the Life of Metallica; pt. 1. All of these instruments were called EX in the beginning and later referred to as MX-220ii.
Interpretation of this title:
220- a typical price tag
II- two pickups
MX-220II is a little bit shorter than the length (from the strap button at bottom to the end of the headstock), the angular is smoother slightly, the distance between the toggle swap to the knob is a bit even closer compared to the current explorer instruments. And it features a distinctive truss rod cover which is parallel to the nut and it has 2 screws. The construction of this particular guitar regarding the combination of the body along with the neck is round jack embedded.
The further adjustment to MX-220II is applying a metal plate with 4 anchoring screws to fix the ports. The truss rod cover still has two screws, but is not parallel to nut any further. No change is found for the rest parts.
Later, in the evolution of the MX-220II, the ESP altered the construction back again to bolt-on structure.
The subsequent MX-220II is very similar to Hetfields primary explorer. This electric guitar is owned by EXPCustom with outdated fashioned body outline and no serial number. Its mentioned that there is no serial number and circular trademark about the headstock back of the MX-220II instrument.
Presumably, the structure of the mx-220II is carried out in accordance with the 1958 explorer

Eventually, the brand new design was called MX250 (later on known as MX-II, 250 indicates the price). The MX-250II is a little longer in comparison with MX-220II, much more pointed at the tip. During early 90's, ESP implemented parallel spherical ports. And in this model, the pickups switch is a little bit farther away from the volume control and pickups.
Mx 250 was unveiled in Japan, with ebony fingerboard, mahogany neck, mahogany body, EMG 81 pickups, poly finish, black dots inlays. Regardless of what color you want, they are always highly-priced. You can ask for a special tuners and also other optional details, and you may customise this guitar in USA, but they are identified as "EXP custom" due to the fact the "MX" is allocated for other models. They've bell-shaped truss rod cover which is fixed with 1 screw, behind the headstock there is the serial number. ESP batch altered the shape of the truss rod cover in 1955.
The picture below is a EXP Custom manufactured 03 MX-II version.
The esp explorer introduced in U.S. are all EXP designs which have 2 styles, ESP and LTD. EXP is of MX-II body, bolt-on neck, the ESP (ESP EXP) edition is characterized by maple neck, mahogany body, rosewood fretboard; the LTD edition (LTD EXP-200) is also of rosewood fretboard and maple neck. It is said that the guitar body applied distinctive materials in distinctive years, alder employed in the earlier years, and later became mahogany. The fretboard inlays also altered, there were two dots on the twelfth fret of the earlier LTD model but changed into a rectangle (engraved with LTD) in later on models.
The subsequent image is an outdated style LTD EXP-200 and an ESP MX-II
In LTD series, there's a type known as EXP-300, which features a neck through structure, licensed Floyd Rose bridge and two EMG 81 pickups
In the year 2000, ESP opened a manufacturing facility in Korea and produced LTD MX-130 which is much like MX-250II. And the intriguing thing is there is no serial number. These products had been marketed solely in Japan. Like MX-II, they've two EMG81 pick-ups, neck through construction and black color finish. These instruments occasionally can be discovered on Ebay but had been discontinued in 2003.
The initial EX/MX-220II customized inlays series is 1989s "EET FUK", which had been issued with a little quantity. The fifth fret is a little smaller and there's no step on the neck. Naturally, Hetfield immediately found this problem, so the manufacturing line had to be close up. It's said that the quantity is lower than thirty. Some mx-250II body made use of this kind of inlays too.
The special mx-250II like "Man To Wolf is named Japans esp particular fascinating group, which implies that you should bid a substantial price to buy them.
Elk Skull MX250 was also created in the interval from late the nineteen nineties to 2003 in custom series, they were customized in the custom store in Japan.
